Week One is over in 806 High School Football and there were some great wins, some surprising losses and some of the same outcomes like Canadian blowing out their opponent. Grab a cup of coffee and let's recap week one in 806 football!
MONTEREY WINS A BIG ONE!

The Plainsmen have been the heel of a lot of jokes, low numbers on the team and a ton of other obstacles on their way to an 0-10 team record in 2022. But, that galvanized the players that stayed and Monterey pulled out a huge victory last night, 44-42 over Odessa's Bronchos! Coach Thrash does it his way; it may not be the most popular way to most, but it's his way and it looks like it's about to start paying off. I felt good for the kids because they have been putting in a ton of work since November trying to right the ship; hopefully it stays afloat.
FRENSHIP AND LCP LOOK GREAT AGAIN

The Tigers are loaded, especially on the offensive side of the ball with Hudson Hutcheson, Landon Hutcheson, Chase Campbell and maybe the best player in the 806, wide receiver Leyton Stone. Stone has eight receptions for 130 yards and three touchdowns last night in a little over three quarters for the Tigers in their 45-26 win over Coronado.
Folks, Coronado is young and they will bounce back! Coach Mann is proven and a great motivator and coach; the Mustangs just have to grow up fast. Isaiah Vazquez played maybe the best team in the 806 with the craziest atmosphere he'll see all year: It's all up from here for Isaiah. I liked what I saw from Surreal Garrett as well for the Mustangs.

Lubbock-Cooper blanked Dumas last night with a 42-0 win while having two players, Jackson Austin and Jayden Hibbler both rush for 97 yards apiece and a touchdown while newcomer, 2025 Wide Receiver Michael Dever, caught a 70-yard touchdown for the Pirates early in the first half! Defensively, Preston Jones had two sacks for the Pirates as they pitched a shutout against the young Demons! A huge game with their crosstown rival is coming Friday; we'll get to that one later.
4A AND 3A RECAP:
Well, one surprise that came out of last night's results was Monahans beating Shallowater, 48-7. It's been a long time since Shallowater has lost a game like that. Coach Vincent will have them better before district play, I guarantee it. Bushland had a great win over West Plains, 47-41 as well. Both of those teams will be great this season. It's amazing how young West Plains is, but how good they are already! Post lost a close one to Brownfield on the road, 28-24 but showed promise in their defeat; keep going, BOLD GOLD!
How about Coach Robinson and Roosevelt dominating River Road, 42-6! That's a great win over a competitive Wildcat team. The Eagles didn't score 40 points all year in 2022.. They scored 42 in their first game of 2023! Muleshoe put it on Littlefield in their latest installment of the "War on 84", 42-13. Muleshoe is going to be good this season and challenge for their district title while I think Littlefield will find their footing later on in the season.
2A RECAP
Ropes opened the season with a huge win on the road at Boys Ranch, 31-12! This was a massive win for the Eagles and for coach Beau Riker; who earns his first victory as a Head Coach! Boys Ranch will be ok as Coach Kelley III has a great staff and this team will get better! Farwell had a huge win over New Deal, 40-30 while Trinity Christian fell short in their home opener against #1 Albany, 22-21. Smyer defeated Crosbyton, Lockney bested Seagraves and Stratford shutout Spearman, 37-0..
I'll be back Saturday with a fresh cup of coffee and some more fresh thoughts for week two of the season!
