6A/5A WEEK ONE PREVIEW: TOUGH TESTS AWAIT FRENSHIP, AMARILLO AND LCP

Football is here for 2022 and I am very honored and excited to start my 10th year of coverage for 806 High School Sports Connection! Week one should be fun in West Texas play as there are some huge games on the horizon starting this Thursday! Here is a preview of the games in 6A and 5A!

FRENSHIP VS CORONADO

THURSDAY, LOWREY FIELD

LUBBOCK, TX

This game should be action-packed as we have two great offenses that will be on display Thursday night in Lubbock! Coronado, led by gunslinger Jett Carroll will be ready to put up a bunch of points and with players like Surreal Garrett and Jordan Kelley on the outside, that tandem will be hard to stop. But, on the other side of the ball I feel like we have the best duo of receivers in the 806 in Tate Beeles and Leyton Stone; a 2025 Wide Receiver who will go big time DI and is one of the best route-runners I’ve seen in a long time!

The game will be decided on defense and who can get a stop or two to derail the other team’s potent attacks throughout the game. Ted Gilmore, Cam Manahan and John Curry will have to play huge for Coronado defensively and it will take a total team effort in order for Frenship to slow Coach Birdwell’s offense down, if it’s possible!

In other games across the 6A and 5A platform, Tascosa will take on Palo Duro Thursday at Dick Bivins Stadium and the Rebels are looking to make another deep run in the playoffs this fall! Led by DI talent like Avion Carter, Keevin Ledoux and Tayden Barnes, expect a victory for Tascosa.

Amarillo will take on Midland Legacy Friday and their high-powered offense led by Marcos Davila; the 2024 QB who has 15 Division One offers and Amarillo’s Jameson Garcia has 12 DI offers at the Wide Receiver position as well! Whoever wins in the trenches will take this game. Monterey will take on Odessa and I expect a win from the Plainsmen and their first-year Head Coach, Judd Thrash! I was very impressed in their scrimmage against Midland Legacy! They looked solid!

Caprock will take on Hereford, Lubbock High will face off against El Paso Socorro at 8:00pm and Plainview will open their season at the Doghouse against Levelland; a team that stunned them last season with a big victory. This game is huge for both squads as both need a good, solid win to start the 2022 campaign! And Lastly, the Dumas Demons will get a visit from the State Semifinalists from Lubbock-Cooper on Friday Night! Dumas has one the best atmospheres in the 806 and they will be loud and proud for the Demons! Chambers will be running behind the BEST line in the state for the Pirates and that might be enough for the Pirates to get a win.
