QUINTANILLA’S SUCCESS ON THE TRACK READIES HIM FOR BIG SEASON ON THE GRIDIRON

What a year for Steven Quintanilla from Sundown! He won two more gold medals on the track at the State Meet in Austin and also had a very successful season for the Roughnecks football squad as he played Wide Receiver and Safety for a team that went to the Area Round before losing to Stamford, 21-7. I caught up with Steven and asked him about the differences for track and football preparation, his favorite athletes, and biggest moments from last season. Here is our interview below.

1. Before we get into football, how about the track season you had! Another great season with more gold medals. What was your favorite moment this season in track?

STEVEN QUINTANILLA

I mean winning state is always gonna be a great moment in the track season, but at the New Deal Track Meet with the 4×4 team was probably one of the best races I’ve been apart of. I love chasing people down and coming out on top.

2. A new coach is at Sundwon now. What has changed so far for you guys?

STEVEN QUINTANILLA

I feel like our new coach is a great fit here. He loves tradition and that’s all we are about here at Sundown, but football-wise the only changes that are coming is a tempo element to our game and our workouts.

3. You play WR and CB. Which one is the best position for you?

STEVEN QUINTANILLA

Defense wins championships, but something about “MOSSing” people makes it more fun to be a WR. I feel like my coverage is decent, but not as good as my route running.

4. Best game last season and why?

STEVEN QUINTANILLA

The best game has to be New Deal. Everyone loves an underdog story. Especially one that gave our district a three-way tie.

5. Best Football athlete, Best track athlete?

STEVEN QUINTANILLA

Track automatically goes to Usian Bolt because he is the goat. Football…. gotta be either Julio Jones or Larry Fitzgerald.

6. What game on your schedule are you looking most forward to?

STEVEN QUINTANILLA

I am looking forward to the Abernathy game. They have really good sportsmanship. They always bring it when it comes to athletics, but I’m ready for a comeback from our first district game last year. We have something to prove to the Lopes…
