BRENDEN LOOKS TO DELIVER THE “MEHL” THIS SEASON FOR THE PIRATES

I’ve followed tis young man since he was at Muleshoe in 2015. He has learned from vigorous offseason training; from Air it Out Camps, to sitting behind players like Danny Campos and Bowling Green starting quarterback, Jarret Doege. This will be the first season where Brenden Mehl will come in as the unquestioned starter and will have a very tough district to deal with teams like Randall, Plainview and Abilene Wylie in the mix now and a very tough non-district schedule with teams like Coronado and Monterey waiting in the wings. There’s some uncertainty for the Pirates this fall as we yet to know who else will be in the backfield with Mehl, tailback-wise. I caught up with Mehl and asked him a few questions about the 2018 season and how it felt to finally be the man and not have that pressure coming into his Senior season. Here is our interview below.

1. I’ve been keeping up with you since Muleshoe! How does it feel to finally be the man without a competition?

BRENDEN MEHL

Competition makes everyone better, I’m never guaranteed the next play and It has always pushed me to compete at a higher level.

2. LCP expects a playoff team every year, how does it feel to carry that pressure this fall?

BRENDEN MEHL

Most people ask me about pressure in games and one thing I can always assure is that I’m most comfortable when it seems to everyone else to be at its highest.

3 You guys probably have the toughest schedule in the 806.. What is the game your most looking forward to this fall?

BRENDEN MEHL

The game I look forward to the most is Rider. They have always been a powerhouse as well as Wylie, but there’s just something about Rider that makes me extremely excited.

4. Your getting some attention on the recruiting circuit, what camps have you been to this summer and what are you trying to work on most to improve for this year?

BRENDEN MEHL

I’ve been to East Central University and Abilene Christian for camps this summer because every athlete that wants to play at the next level has to make smart decisions about which camps they attend, and being at the camps that you know the coaches from certain colleges want you there. And the biggest thing I am working to improve for the upcoming year is being a leader and being consistent.

5. Favorite athlete and why?

BRENDEN MEHL

My favorite athlete is by far Johnny Manziel because of what he does on the football field.

6. Your favorite game last year? Why?

My favorite game last year would have to be against Clovis, coming back from down 21, converting on 4th and 9 with the game on the line in OT and playing a fun game with ups and downs against guys I grew up with in grade school is as good as it gets.
