BARKER TAKES OVER THE REIGNS AT AMARILLO HIGH AND WILL LEAD FROM THE FRONT..

Beau played receiver and he was a good one for the Sandies in run-paced offense. The offseason has brought about a lot of changes for the Sandies already as they have hired a new coach in Chad Dunnam, who came over from a successful Dumas team, and a new district that will be one of the toughest in Texas in 2-5A DI. This season and for the foreseeable future, Beau Barker will be the quarterback for the storied school of Amarillo. I’ve watched him play in a couple of 7-on-7 tournaments and he looks good so far. I spoke with Beau to ask him about the season coming up and the transition from Wideout to Quarterback!

BEAU BARKER

Since Coach Dunham has taken over our program the attitude throughout the whole program has been completely different. He has created a culture of excitement in every aspect of the program whether it is weight training, normal practice, or 7-on-7 our entire coaching staff makes sure the players are excited.

2. You move from receiver to quarterback this fall. What have you had to do different to prepare for this season since you are moving to QB?

BEAU BARKER

I have played quarterback all my life so the transition back was not too tough. The most difficult part of this fall was moving from the Wing-T to a wide open offense. Our team was very excited about this change and we all took on the challenge with the attitude that the team comes first and we will play anywhere we needed in order to help the team, and for me that position was quarterback.

3. Your new district is loaded! What game stuck out to you when you saw your district schedule?

BEAU BARKER

The game that stuck out to me was Lubbock Monterey game. We are used to playing them in the first round of the playoffs and now we get a chance to play them in the regular season. They always have a good team and it should be an exciting game.

4. Being counted on next season for the Sandies as a leader, what have you been doing this summer to improve your game and stature?

BEAU BARKER

This summer the new coaching staff put a major emphasis on our strength and conditioning program. Our teammates are doing a great job of holding everyone accountable on being there and I am doing my best to get my teammates there. This summer I have also gone to college camps and quarterback specific camps to try to help develop the skills I will need to run our new offense next season.

5. Tascosa vs Amarillo week. How big is it? What was your best memory from last year’s game?

BEAU BARKER

The Tascosa vs Amarillo High game is easily the most electrifying game I have ever been a part of. Last year I got the chance to get the ball thrown to me and after I caught it the cheers I received from the stands is definitely something I will remember for the rest of my life. There was a great picture that you took of that catch and it is my favorite picture to this day.
