806 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS: CUTTER SPARKS AND THE SHALLOWATER MUSTANGS

Shallowater has been the staple of excellence the in the past seven years as one of the teams we always see playing into late November and early December. Will this season be the same? Yes… Coach Bryan Wood is one of the best Coaches in Texas, PERIOD! Wood demands excellence and attention to detail, but will go through a brick wall for his kids anytime. This years bunch of Mustangs is loaded again, led by Hayden VanderRoest, Braxton Jurado and Cutter Sparks at the quarterback position. After a dominant run through their district last season, this season seems to be up for grabs between Shallowater and Bushland; a team that drops down from 4A DII after an impressive season in 2017 which ended with a loss in the Quarterfinal Round against state-finalists from Graham. Can Shallowater stay healthy? That seems to get all teams late in the season and has derailed the last couple of season for the Mustangs as well. If healthy, Shallowater is going to be a factor late in the playoffs again. Here is their schedule and my interview with their starting quarterback, Cutter Sparks.

3. You have a solid team coming back, and you’re in a solid district. What were your first thoughts after you saw your new district?

CUTTER SPARKS

My first thoughts after I saw the new district was that the returning starters need to get the guys that are coming up ready as fast as possible so that we can start winning right of the bat and not have to ease into it.

4. What’s the best game you’re looking forward to on the schedule?

CUTTER SPARKS

The game I am looking forward to most is the Bushland game. I think they will be a good match up and prepare us for hard games in the playoffs.

5. What is a prospective college getting when they come for Cutter?

CUTTER SPARKS

A college that comes for me will get whatever they need. I will do anything I have to to make any team I play for the best they can be. I’ve made sacrifices to be able to play at a high level so I’m ready to continue to strive to be the best.

6. Favorite game last year?

CUTTER SPARKS

My favorite game last year… I would have to say it’s a tie between the Idalou game and the (Midland)Greenwood game. Idalou was awesome because we got to play on live tv but the Greenwood game was incredible as well because of how well we played and beat a very good Greenwood team.

7. How did it feel to play on National Television last year against Idalou?

CUTTER SPARKS

The feeling of playing on live tv for the first game was definitely something I will remember for the rest of my life. I was extremely nervous all week before the game but as soon as the opening kick off happened all the nerves went away and our team just balled out.
