2A Football, the heart and soul of Texas High School Football for most of the fans is getting closer to kickoff. In the 806 for the last few years, that is where we had the most success; from Canadian winning back-to-back a few years prior, to Abernathy and Wellington getting to the Regional Finals as well. So, all the games count in this classification and we will see a couple of our teams vying for a spot in a title game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Texas in December. Here is a look at our top five games this season so far..
1. WELLINGTON VS ABERNATHY: SEPT. 14TH 7:00PM: WELLINGTON, TX
This game is going to be good! Abernathy has moved up to 3A DII and will look to contend with powers like Childress and Canadian, who has been a thorn in their side in recent memory. Bryson Daily returns for his Junior season alongside Kole Carlisle at tailback in what should be another great 1-2 punch in the backfield for Coach Daily and the Antelopes. Wellington comes into this season as a favorite to win 2A DII’s state title…Isn’t that every year? Mcknight will step in at quarterback and the Skyrockets also bring back the best Offensive Lineman in West Texas and Texas Tech Commit, Trevor Roberson. A great game that will give both of these squads a test early before district play.
2. NEW DEAL AT POST: NOV. 2ND 7:30PM: POST, TX
Last year New Deal rolled throughout the season to a 9-1 record and the #1 seed out of their district and Post struggled a tad, but found there way late and set up a colossal matchup between the two in the Area Round last season. While New Deal was favored, Post attacked and won the game, 32-21. This season they’ll meet again late in the season in district play in Post. Jett Whitfield, Dylan Jerden, Kendell Dunn and Division One Iowa State Commit, DK Blaylock returns to New Deal’s defense. But, they did lose Nehemiah Martinez to a transfer. The Lions are a team that could make a deep run if they stay healthy and locked in on defense, I don’t think they’ll have a problem on the offensive side of the ball. Post lost a ton of players from last year’s team and will be young with Taytem Thetford being the focal point if the offense, as state by Coach Pittman. Both of these teams always get better later in the season so this one could be a classic; a classic that I’ll be to see live.
3. SEAGRAVES AT BOVINA: OCT. 26 7:00PM: BOVINA, TX
Bovina runs a fast-paced offense and has had some recent success the last couple of years. Seagraves is ALWAYS in the mix when the playoffs come around and are led by one of the best Coaches in Texas in Steve Heryford. Anybody remember the shoot they had in the Bi-District round a couple f years back?? This one will probably end up like that game as well.
4. NEW HOME VS HALE CENTER: AUG. 31ST 7:30PM: NEW HOME, TX
New Home’s Leopards opted to play up in 2A DII instead of six-man football and this will be the first-ever 11-man football game! At home and under the lights against a Hale Center team that will be favored in this contest. But, this is a big deal as New Home is showing that they want to take strides in getting their football team better and they’re not afraid to play anyone. Should be a great game!
5. MEMPHIS AT PANHANDLE: SEPT. 7TH: 7:00PM, PANHANDLE, TX
Panhandle and Memphis both play a similar game; play tough defense and pound the opponent on offense on the ground. Last year, the Panthers mad e deep run in the playoffs and were led by Braden Durst, who had an exceptional season last fall and got an offer from Dordt College this summer in the process. Memphis has a stingy defense which is captained by Broadrick Logan who has received two offers himself already and should garner more during the season. A great test for both squads in 2A DI and 2A DII cross-action!
Now, two rilvaries that are gone and will be missed this season is Canadian vs Stratford and New Deal vs Abernathy, but the show must go on!!!
