Well, football is around the corner now as we await the Summer and some 7-on-7 play for most squads in Texas before two-a-days in August. But looking ahead to this fall, some teams are already deep and look to be on their way to a deep run if they get solid Quarterback play as they did last year. So, who are these teams? Let’s take a look at them individually.
CORONADO MUSTANGS: DISTRICT 2-5A
Last year Coronado had one of the best Quarterbacks in Texas in Qua Gray, who has moved on to Eastern Illinois and DI play. This year, and the next two after this year, Sawyer Robertson will be leading the vaunted Mustang offense. Defensively, the Mustangs may have the best unit in West Texas with Djay Davis, Charlie Robinson, and Trey Stephens leading the way for the 2017 squad. Offensively, Kaleb Manuel, DI Wide Receiver Blair Conwright, Jon Hernandez, and more are back and very explosive. Sawyer, once he gets it all together, will be garnering DI interest, but more importantly, may be the reason the Mustangs go further than week 14 in Texas High School Football.
BUSHLAND FALCONS: DISTRICT 2-3A DI
Bushland went four rounds deep last year in 4A DII’s playoffs before falling to a damn good Graham team. Now, look where they are the next two years: in 3A.. Coach Thomas also has a high-speed offense that can put up a bunch of points in a hurry and looked unstoppable at times last year under the direction of Colton Moore; the Texas State Baseball commit. Can Wren Watson get it done this year like the previous quarterbacks that have come before him? I saw him this Spring at my camp and he looks the part. Their toughest competition this season before the 2nd round of the playoffs will be right in their District against the Shallowater Mustangs. I wouldn’t be surprised if those teams play each other twice this fall.
MONTEREY PLAINSMEN: DISTRICT 2-5A
The Plainsmen always reload… This year won’t be any different as Coreon Bailey takes the helm at quarterback for Monterey. He is elusive, fast, stocky, and has a cannon arm. It will be tough every Friday for the defensive coordinators that will have to gameplan for him. A true dual-threat that will make some noise for the Plainsmen this season..
TASCOSA REBELS: DISTRICT 2-6A
The Rebels have some National players in the spotlight with King Doerue and Brandon White, but who will lead their complicated running attack? Enos? Plunk? Who knows.. But whoever starts and has a chance to lead the Rebels offensive attack will also have a legit shot to go three rounds deep in the playoffs.
BROWNFIELD CUBS: DISTRICT 1-3A DI
The Cubs have historically been good, and get a break this year with a district that already puts them in the playoffs. Brownfield has a new coach in Duane Toliver who comes over from Tulia and a new attitude as well. Who will lead Flores’ new high-octane offense? This should be fun to watch.
