THE ELITE ELEVEN UNDEFEATED TEAMS IN THE 806: THE STATE OF THE 806 ADDRESS..

There are 65 teams in the 2A-6A football level that I cover every year. Only eleven teams remain without a loss on their record in 2016. Why are these teams undefeated? What will be the reason those teams finish the season undefeated? Why will these teams suffer a loss, if at all? Let’s go through every undefeated team and their chances of finishing the season unblemished.

THE STATE OF THE 806 ADDRESS: THE ELITE ELEVEN UNDEFEATED TEAMS IN THE 806

#1(12) LUBBOCK-COOPER PIRATES: 4-0 DISTRICT 4-5A

PROBABILITY OF FINISHING SEASON UNDEFEATED— 75%

The Pirates have all the tools. They have performed tremendously this year with big wins over teams that were playoff teams in 2015, and shutting out two out of their last three opponents; both of which are in the 6A classification while Lubbock is 5A. Jarret Doege is looking superior in the backfield leading a dangerous team that has finesse and power now that Elijah Boyd is starting at tailback. Ty Thomas, the sixth-rated safety in Texas and Arizona State commit, is not even on the field yet! They have some colossal games coming in district with the likes of Monterey and Coronado, but they could win them all if the Pirates are playing the way they are playing now. They have a serious shot to run the table and go far in the playoffs as well.

#2 CORONADO MUSTANGS: 4-0 DISTRICT 4-5A

PROBABILITY OF FINISHING SEASON UNDEFEATED—-70%

The Mustangs have completely turned it around in 2016. Give credit to the workouts and summer commitment from the leaders from Coronado this season. Qua Gray has improved drastically since last season and is over 1,000 yards passing in four games. Chance Fair, Noah Sifrit, Blair Conwright and Jarrod Compton are proving to be some serious weapons for the Mustang attack as well. Defensively, Coronado has the best linebacking core in the 806 with Mason Montoya, Seth Wood, and Trey Stephens. With Christian Hayes lurking in the secondary and on punt and kick returns, they are a complete team. Can they navigate a dangerous district schedule? Also, can the Mustangs get by the 5-0 Mustangs from Andrews Friday?

#3 MONTEREY PLAINSMEN: 4-0 DISTRICT 4-5A

PROBABILITY OF FINISHING SEASON UNDEFEATED—–75%

Monterey has it all. Loaded at every position on the field with more players waiting to pound you out too. Jaron Jones, Braylon Lawson-Young, Kalain Noseff, Xavier White, Zae Johnson..Need I say more? They will blitz by Stephenville on Friday, and then get their toughest game of the year; a meeting in Abilene with the Cooper Cougars to start District 4-5A play. Will the Plainsmen stay composed? How will Monterey do if they are in some adversity on the road unlike at any time this season so far. What about when Monterey goes to Lubbock Cooper on Oct. 28th?

#4 CANYON EAGLES: 4-0/ 1-0 IN DISTRICT 4-5A

PROBABILITY TO FINISH SEASON UNDEFEATED—90%

The mighty Eagles of Canyon are the real deal this season. They have undisputed leaders on both sides of the ball in Gunnar Palacios and Dayne Douglass. The Eagles also have a multitude of weapons on both sides of the ball to compliment their leaders and attack teams in a variety of ways throughout the game. Who would’ve known that Dayne would be running touchdowns in the offensive backfield on teams this fall? It’s a team that has the look of a Regional Final appearance and maybe more if they get the production out of players like Jaelin Ford and Dakota Puga like they did last year. Dumas, Amarillo, and Caprock, yes Caprock will be tough tests for Canyon. After that, its smooth sailing, and maybe a chance at an undefeated season.

#5 DUMAS DEMONS: 4-0/ 1-0 IN DISTRICT 4-5A

PROBABILITY TO FINISH SEASON UNDEFEATED—-75%

Coming into the season I thought that the Demons would finish fourth in district behind Canyon, Amarillo, and Plainview. Now that the season has kicked off and the Demons have defeated Randall in their first district game, The Demons should finish second and may have a shot at first if they can take down Canyon; which may not happen, but they will have a legit shot to do it. The double quarterback combo and the array of running backs like Josh Mares is a lot for any defense to deal with. Then you have to deal with Derek Ditto; one of the toughest linebackers in the 806 that should garner an offer soon. It’s tough to win at their place and the Demons are mentally stronger than any team I have seen in a while. Lookout 806, these guys are for real.

#6 CAPROCK LONGHORNS: 4-0/ 1-0 IN DISTRICT 4-5A

PROBABILITY TO FINISH SEASON UNDEFEATED——50%

Wide Receiver Alex Cantu and Quarterback Zac Encinias are lighting it up in 2016, and Kaleb King looks at home at the tailback position for the “ROCK”. The Longhorns stunned Amarillo, 38-30 on Thursday night for their first victory over the Sandies in 30 years! WOW! Don’t expect a drop in wins from the Longhorns, but it will be difficult to beat Dumas, Canyon, and Plainview in their district. Cant they? Yes. Will they? I see them winning at least one or two, but they will not beat Canyon in their match up with the Eagles. Caprock will make it to the postseason, and at the start of the year no one predicted that.

#7 NEW DEAL LIONS: 5-0 DISTRICT 2-2A DI

PROBABILITY TO FINISH THE SEASON UNDEFEATED—- 85%

Before the season started, I thought New Dal could finish second in 2-2A DI behind Floydada. Fast-Forward to the middle of the season and I think New Deal can go undefeated in the regular season for the second-straight year, if the Lions can get by Abernathy in Lopecountry in late October. Jaxson Durham has shown true leader skills as he hasn’t got to pass too much with Mark Adams putting up scary numbers in the backfield, but showed his value when he passed for four touchdowns in their win against Tulia on Friday. The big question for me with the Lions: What happens when they hit some adversity?

#8 (10)WELINGTON SKYROCKETS: 5-0 DISTRICT 2-2A DII

PROBABILITY TO FINISH SEASON UNDEFEATED—100%

The skyrocket boom has won in every way possible this year. From blowouts, to beating 3A teams like Childress, to surviving double-overtime thrillers like their win over a great West Texas team; they are buttoned up for success in 2A DII. Luke Williams looks good at the quarterback position while the Tellez brothers are dominating on the offensive side of the ball. The Skyrockets defense is legit too. How do you beat them? It will be tough as only Clarendon and Memphis will give the “Rockets” some stiff competition on their way to an undefeated season.

#9 FARWELL STEERS 4-0 DISTRICT 3-2A DII

PROBABILITY TO FINISH SEASON UNDEFEATED—-50%

If the Steers can get by Post Friday they will have a shot as they are in a weak district. But, that’s if they can get by Post.

#10 BOVINA MUSTANGS 4-0 DISTRICT 3-2A DII

PROBABILITY TO FINISH SEASON UNDEFEATED—80%

Bovina has been the surprise to me this season. 5-0 and dominating opponents on the way. Their district is tough with teams like the undefeated Farwell Steers and Sudan’s Hornets. But if they can beat Farwell, which won’t be easy, they could actually run the table!

#11 CLARENDON BRONCOS 5-0 DISTRICT 2-2A DII

PROBABILITY TO FINISH SEASON UNDEFEATED—60%

Clarendon is in one of the toughest districts in West Texas in 2-2A DII. With district play starting next week expect the Broncos to compete for second place as I think that Wellington will win this district, but every spot after that is up for grabs as I see Memphis sliding back into the pack. Pleasantly surprised at how good Clarendon has been and how easily they are blasting opponents too. The Broncos have outscored their last two opponents 97-0..WHOAH!!
