806’S TOP TEN REGULAR SEASON GAMES COMING THIS FALL

The 806 is often criticized for not fielding a state champion in 4A-6A play in football, but I feel like we are closing the gap. Teams like Perryton, Pampa, Lubbock-Cooper, Coronado,Tascosa, and Levelland are making tremendous strides and should make some major noise in 2016. Speaking of 2016, let’s reveal our top ten games coming for the 806 this fall! Make sure to vote for your favorite choice below..

1.  FRENSHIP VS LUBBOCK-COOPER

(SEPT. 9TH, 7:00PM @FRENSHIP)

KEY PLAYERS: FRENSHIP– ZACH COSTANZO, JACOB PIEL/ LUBBOCK-COOPER– JARRET DOEGE, JOSH MOORE, TY THOMAS, SETH WATTS

Tresten and Ronald both have moved on to college.

Tresten and Ronald both have moved on to college.

This is the game that all of Lubbock awaits to see. I remember the stands being so full at Lubbock-Cooper’s stadium that the Frenship fans had to sit on the Pirates side since their was no room in the away teams bleachers. Last year Ronald Awatt exploded with a 32-yard touchdown with 47 seconds left to win the game for Frenship, 21-16. In a game that was defined by the Tigers defense inside the red zone, will the defense come up clutch again this year because they will be under fire all game with Jarret Doege, Seth Watts, Josh Moore, and Ty Thomas bringing the heat. It will be a thriller once again.

2. CORONADO VS MONTEREY

OCT. 14TH, 8:00PM @MONTEREY

Devin Morrison goes up for a catch against Trent Ward

Devin Morrison goes up for a catch against Trent Ward

KEY PLAYERS: MONTEREY– TRENT WARD, CORBIN WHITFIELD, KAILAN NOSEFF, TREY MANAHAN/ CORONADO– QUA GRAY, CHRISTIAN HAYES, SETH WOOD, DEVIN MORRISON

A rivalry that goes back a half a century, this edition will be for all the bragging rights again and maybe a playoff spot as well. Can Coronado finish the game unlike last year’s breakdown in the final minutes that saw Baylor Mitchell score with a minute left, followed by a sack from the Plainsmen on the final play to seal the win? Both teams lost a lot, but have some great players coming back too. Another fourth quarter game that will be determined by turnovers; whoever wins that battle will win the game.

3. PERRYTON VS BROWNFIELD

OCT. 21ST, 7:00PM @CUB STADIUM

BROWNFIELD TX

Brownfield's Jaelyn Nolan scrambles against Slaton

KEY PLAYERS: BROWNFIELD– JAELYN NOLAN, JEZREEL GRIFFIN, ISIAH HOOD, DARIUS KYLE/ PERRYTON– HADLY ALLRED, DALTON RIGDON, XAVIER RIVERA, KAIDEN SUMMERVILLE

In a game that may well decide district 1-4A DII, the good news for Brownfield is that they will get Perryton’s Rangers at home. The bad news, the Rangers have 17 starters returning to a squad that went three rounds deep in the playoffs in 2015. Dalton Rigdon, Hadley Allred, and Xavier Rivera will tee off against a dangerous Brownfield Cub team, led by Jaelyn Nolan; the ultimate threat that can score from anywhere on the field. Can the Cubs secondary stop the vaunted passing attack from the Rangers? Can Perryton contain Jezreel, Isiah, and Jaelyn?

4. TASCOSA VS AMARILLO

SEPT. 9TH, 7:30 PM @DICK BIVENS STADIUM

TASCOSA IS BACK AND READY FOR THE SANDIES

TASCOSA IS BACK AND READY FOR THE SANDIES

KEY PLAYERS: AMARILLO– ELLIS NEWKIRK, ROSS ERRIGNTON, MAX MAXFIELD, GARRETT PAYNE/ TASCOSA– BERT MORRIS, JR., JOHN MALANG, PRESTON BRADIC, COLBY WILLIAMS

Tascosa and Amarillo.. Need I say more? This has always been the panhandle’s largest clash, with the two elite teams lining up against each other every year. This year both teams will need to replace great quarterbacks along with sensational tailbacks. Brock Mooneyham should step in at quarterback for the Rebels, while Amarillo’s Reagen Hill may start for the Golden Sandstorm. This is not a district game, but will still mean everything to both teams..we wouldn’t have it any other way.

5. RANDALL VS CANYON

OCT. 7TH, 7:00PM AT CANYON

Randall Returns an explosive defense

Randall Returns an explosive defense

KEY PLAYERS: CANYON– DAYNE DOUGLASS, GUNNAR PALACIOS, JAELIN FORD, DAKOTA PUGA/ RANDALL– JAYTON BENNETT, CODY GATTIS, LOGAN NELSON, JAY JOHNSON

A game that usually comes on the last week of the season comes earlier this year. Canyon and Randall both have went deep in the payoffs in consecutive years and this year’s editions of both teams won’t be any different. This game introduces a new player into the fold for Canyon; Jaelin Ford, the transfer from Amarillo who had over 2,000 yards rushing and 32 touchdowns. Can Randall fit in the pieces needed to replace players like Paul Terry, Logan Nix, and Tanner Draper?

6. SHALLOWATER VS MULESHOE

NOV. 4TH, 7:30PM @SHALLOWATER

shoe

KEY PLAYERS: SHALLOWER– CUTTER SPARKS, BRODY HENDRICK, BRAXTON JURADO, NIK HODGES/ MULESHOE– DONOVAN GUITERREZ, BETO DIAZ, JASON FLOREZ, DAGEN DUNHAM

Coming off one of the most exciting playoff games in recent 806 memory, Shallowater and Muleshoe move into the same district and will play last on the schedule; probably for first place in district 1-3ADI. Beto Diaz steps in for Danny Campos at quarterback while Cutter Sparks will try to fill Chris Contreras’ void at quarterback for Shallowater. Where will Shallowater’s offense come from this year after losing some key players? Will Beto stay healthy this year as the injury bug has gotten to him all of his career? Both teams will knock out some teams in the playoffs, so let’s just enjoy a great face-off!

7. PAMPA VS LEVELLAND

OCT. 28TH, 7:00PM @PAMPA

Gerber Returns to an electric Lobo Offense

Gerber Returns to an electric Lobo Offense

KEY PLAYERS: LEVELLAND– NICK GERBER, JEFFREY ELLIOTT, QUALIN MILLER, BRADEN PRICE, KEAGEN DENT/ PAMPA– JAYSON THOMAS, BRENDON WOELFLE, BRYCE PARKER, BRADEY PORTER

In a heated game last year between these foes, Pampa came out on top as both teams represented their district well and went a few rounds deep in the playoffs. Levelland returns the top quarterback in West Texas, Nick Gerber, to a super offense that will explode like last year’s great team. Pampa has one of the best receivers in 4A in Jayson Thomas and an all-state worthy linebacker in Bradey Porter. Who keeps their composure all game and converts on turnovers? That, in my opinion, is who will win the game and the district.

8. ABERNATHY VS POST

AUG 26TH, 7:30PM @POST

aber

KEY PLAYERS: POST– AJ REED, AJ ESCOBEDO, MICHAEL PHURGESON, BRODY KELSO/ ABERNATHY: MARK PANDO, BRYSON DAILY, XAVIER RIVERA

This year, Post comes into the fray as a serious 2A DI title contender. AJ Escobedo and AJ Reed are going to be a handful along with Brody Kelso. Michale Phurgeson will be a threat as well for the Antelopes of Post. Abernathy has a new quarterback this year and Bryson Daily will immediately make an impact for the Antelopes. Physical, hard-hitting, competitive..those are some of the words that come to mind in this game.

9. IDALOU VS ROOSEVELT

OCT. 21ST, 7:30PM @IDALOU

Isia Montgomery will be counted on heavily for Roosevelt tis season

Isia Montgomery will be counted on heavily for Roosevelt tis season

KEY PLAYERS: ROOSEVELT– ISIA MONTGOMERY, KEVIN SHOEMAKER, TEAGAN COOKSEY/ IDALOU– EDEN CERVANTEZ, LUKE RODRIGUEZ, JOHNATHAN PACHECO

Idalou is used to making deep runs and this year will be no different except the Wildcats will take a little longer to gel after replacing 18 starters. Roosevelt disappointed last year as the Eagles did not make the playoffs with an exceptional roster that included Texas Tech preferred walk-on, Colt Garrett. This is a weak 2-3A district which makes this game ultimately the district championship winner in my opinion. Idalou thumped the Eagles last year so Roosevelt will be ready to exact a measure revenge… but can they?

10. WELLINGTON VS MEMPHIS

OCT. 7TH, 7:00PM @WELLINGTON

David Dickson will be on an all-state team this year

David Dickson will be on an all-state team this year

KEY PLAYERS: MEMPHIS- DAVID DICKSON, NICK ADAME, CLIFFORD BYRD, MATTHEW HAASE/ WELLINGTON– TREVOR ROBERTSON, JOSE TELLEZ, LUKE WILLIAMS, AUTURO TELLEZ

Now that both of these teams are in the same district, their matchup will determine who wins that district for one, and on what path both teams will take until the ultimately meet one another in the 2A DII Semifinal, unless Seagraves chimes in. Both of these squads are experienced, hungry, dangerous, well-coached, and confident. I can’t wait to see this physical game!
